The Buddenbrooks

The Buddenbrooks By Thomas Mann Pages: 843 Luka Ilic After reading 134 pages of the book the Buddenbrooks, I can say that the book has a lot of not necessary dialogue. I would say that this book has a too much of detail which comes maybe to a point which ruins the wish to even continue reading the book. The book has also a too much of dialogue that is not needed at all. The book is about a rich family in Germany at the time period of the 1830s in a small town of Lumerck in Germany. The main character in the book is Thomas Buddenbrook. Who is the head of the Buddenbrook family. The family is in constant improvement especially in wealth, they have a tremendous amount of money, there are some talks that they are the richest family in the region of northern Germany. Thomas has hundereds of square kilometers under wheat, corn, and tobacco leaves. He marries Gerda, who was a daughter of a famous Nederland’s count family. They marry and get a son who was named Hano. Thomas’s father seems to be getting very ill since he is old, blackness and mourning might surround the family mansion of the Buddenbrooks. The book has a very long introduction where we can discover the life story of every character especially about the main characters. The book focuses a lot on the emotional characteristics of the characters. The Buddenbrook family has a great story behind them which their generations have left y their success in the whole Empire of Germany. The Budeenbrook family has a big brain and wheat storages where big profit comes to the family. The family is expanding sons and daughters of the family are getting married. The Father old Johann Buddenbrook is in still good years and in constant improvement. When I look through the book I can see that Gerda (Tony’s wife) reminds me a great deal to my book project partner my grandmother. Gerda in the book is described as a calm, clever, and loving person who cares about her husband an later about her son Hano. She plays the violin and teaches Hano afterwards the violin too, although, Tony requests that playing a instrument is only for girls and women ( which is in today’s time total prejudice, Maybe even for that time which was almost 250 years ago) Gerda is also very humble to the whole falimy, she even sometimes does physical work around the house instead of the servants like cleaning, whipping the windows, cooking food, etc. My grandmother shares a lot of characteristics with Frau Gerda Buddenbrook. Plus they share a common similarity, they both have very strict husbands who work night and day and are not much interested in the family life, instead they are interested the most in their business and work

  3. It's too bad you don't like the book. It sounds like something good, but not good enough for me to read it. Good job on the post though. It is funny that you find the character in the book similar to somebody in your family
