catch 22 luka brown blog post 4

Catch-22

Pages: 416
Author: Joseph Heller
Genre: Classic

“ You put so much stock in winning wars,” the grubby iniquitous old man scoffed. “ The real trick lies in losing wars.” This statement was shown in the book and for a bit I was trying to figure it out. After some thinking I had two minds about this statement. It is not the best to lose wars because if you lose then maybe your country would be taken over and many things would change. On the other hand though losing can cause more bad things then winning.

When I picked up the book again it starts off with Yossarian in the hospital because of him not wanting to fly. He meets a soldier who is in a full body cast and has to feed and drink through a tube. Yossarian wonders if the soldier is even a live. When doctors start to get suspicious about Yossarian’s health he copies a man who says he sees everything twice. Yossarian uses this and is able to stay in the hospital. Doctors soon think that he might die but one doesn’t believe him. Even his family thinks that he is going to die. Later on we view the conversation between Nately and his father. Natly’s father doesn’t like America and starts to question how long is it going to last.

For me there are multiple themes written in the story. One minor one is love. During the story Yossarian meets a woman who he is madly in love with. Yossarien has to leave her because of her family.     He learns that nothing can last. The author is able to intertwine the themes into the words and lines of the book. My father loves this about the book. It makes the story interesting.

  2. i agree with inho, you have a really nice and clear style of writing and its easy to understand. maybe you could just label which paragraph answers the questions from blog post number 4. Maybe you could also explain a bit more about how the themes are interesting. :)

  5. This sounds like a very interesting book, and I might want to read it soon :) Also your quotes are really interesting about losing and winning wars, and which one is the key, which one is better. Seems like you are enjoying it, and I can't wait to see what happens next!
