Title: Oliver Twist
Author: Charles Dickens
Genre: Classic
Pages: 360

So, reading 2 chapters a week with my mom was a slow process, but when we have time to discuss it, we both understand it better. So basically what happened from chapters 1-6 is that Oliver Twist was born in the presence of a drunk nurse. His mom kisses his forehead and dies. The previous night, she was found lying on the street with no marriage ring. Oliver is then sent to an orphanage where he got is name by the list of names in alphabetical order since he had no parent identity. Oliver is recognized as being too old to be in the orphanage and then is sent to a workhouse with no better conditions than the orphanage. In the orphanage the owner would keep a lot of money to themselves and not feed the children, so many would starve to death, however the kids were also very hungry in the workhouse. When Oliver arrived, a child said that if he doesn't get more food he'll consider eating one of them. The other boys got scared so they played a game to see who will ask for more food at supper. Oliver lost so he had to ask for more food. When he did Mr.Bumble and Mr.Gamefield said whoever get Oliver off their back they will receive an award of 5 pounds of food. The boys locked Oliver in a dark room as a public display. When people realized he was so pale and had an alarmed face, they asked him why. Oliver answered by saying that he will volunteer to be beaten up or killed, just not work for Mr.Bumble. They decided to send him at see to work as a cabin boy for Mrs.Sowerberry, he will die soon there. So they did. When Oliver came there he ate the leftovers even the dog declined to eat, however he also met two apprentices Noah and Charlotte, who would wake him up. There was a funeral of a woman. Her mother begged the husband of her dead daughter to give her food and robe for the funeral. So he did. Before the funeral at the cemetery some boys would jump over the coffin as entertainment which would lead to Mr.Bumble beating a few of them up. When the funeral ended Mr.Bumble got the family out of there and Mrs.Sowerberry took the woman's robe. They left. The next day a person attended the place where Oliver was at. His master dressed him up to make an impression. Oliver then realized that the family was very wealthy. Noah got jealous at Oliver and insulted his dead mother. Oliver got very angry and started a fight, where Mrs.Sowerberry and Charlotte came to help Noah. Oliver was beaten up by 3 other boys and then was locked up in a cabin. This is as far as me and my mom got and this is my favorite part as I read so far, the dialog between Noah and Oliver:
"'Yer know, Work'us,' continued Noah, emboldened by Oliver's silence, and speaking in a jeering tone of affected pity-of all tones the most annoying- 'yer know, Work'us, it can't be helped how; and of course yer couldn't help it then: and I'm very sorry for it; and I'm sure we all are, pity yer very much. But yer must know, Work'us, yer mother was a regular right-down bad 'un.' 'What did you say?' inquired Oliver, looking up very quickly. 'A regular right-down bad 'un, Work'us,' replied Noah, coolly. 'And it's a great deal better, Work'us, that she died when she did, or else she'd have been hard labouring in Bridewell, or transported, or hung; which is more likely than either, isn't it?' Crimson with fury, Oliver started up; overthrew the chair and table; seized Noah by the throat; shook him in the violence of his rage, till his teeth chattered in his head; and, collecting his whole force into one heavy blow, felled him to the ground."

What do you love/appreciate most about the protagonist of this novel?

My mom and I love how Oliver stands up for himself and isn't afraid to do anything. He is very brave, but the world and people around him are very cruel to him.

Give 1 example of whom she/he reminds each of you of and why.

Oliver Twist reminds me of Annie in sort of way because they both a have a horrible life at an orphanage, however the story of him getting to great fortune and happiness might not be true, I have to read on and figure out. My mom doesn't recall anyone or anything that had or has such a horrible life story, but I told her about Annie's story and she agrees with me.
