OK, I finished reading this book. I loved it. It is such a nice, sad story. Yeah, the sad part is toward the end, but it has a happy ending.
So, the horse needed to change the master again. Black Beauty was taken to a horse fair. A horse fair is a place where horses are on display and people walk around and try to find the perfect horse for them. There was one man who was interested in Black Beauty. He seemed nice enough to Black Beauty. The man
approached and admitted he was interested in Beauty. The Governor, who was looking after Beauty on the fair gave the man Beauty. The man was very nice. He had a whole family. He had a wife Polly, who was also
a very nice and kind lady. They had a son, Harry who was 12. They also had a daughter Dorothea (everybody called her Dolly) who was 8. They were a really happy family.
Jerry had another horse, Captain. He was a old horse and he always seemed sad. There was a reason for this. In his early life his master was a army commander and the horse was trained for battles. Then one day a war started. Of course, Captain was in the battle as well. He and his master held on. Then in one battle, Captain's master was shot. He fell on the ground dead. Captain fell down next to his master hurt. Only a couple of days later did people find and help Captain.
Jerry was a cab driver so Beauty had to become a cab horse. At first it was not easy, but he got used to it and than it was fine. Jerry worked only 6 days per week. His Sundays he spent with the family. One day, a man came to Jerry's residence and asked if he is willing to take the mistress to and from the church every day. He was offered a ton of money, but Jerry rejected. Family was more important to him than money.
Soon winter came and the weather became worse and worse. Jerry had to spend the whole day outside. While winter lasted, Dolly would come everyday many times and bring her dad something warm to drink or eat. Also, Jerry had a very special customer during the winter. A gentleman who was a very kind
man who knew good from bad. One day while them two were driving, the gentlemen saw a man whipping his two horses. The gentleman stepped out of the cart and wrote down exactly what he saw in his notebook.
There was this cab driver, Seedy Sam who was extremely unsatisfied with his job. He worked on Sundays but he wasn't paid almost at all. One day he made a protesting speech in front of Jerry and other cab drivers. The next day Seedy Sam did not show up. One of the cab drivers heard that he got very ill and he cannot get out of bed. The next day, Seedy Sam died.
One day while Beauty was waiting for Jerry to finish something, a worn out horse parked next to him. All of a sudden the horse asked "Beauty, is that you?" It was Ginger. She was all worn out and old. Beauty was so happy when he saw her. The next day, while Beauty waited again she saw a funeral going by with a dead horse. He recognized the horse. It was Ginger.
New Year came. Jerry had to work om it. It was a lot of work because everybody was going to parties. Three young men entered the cab. They went to a party. When they arrived at their destination it was nine'o clock. The men payed Jerry to stay and wait for them. They said they would stay only an hour. They lied. They stayed until midnight. It was very cold outside and Jerry had to give Beauty his coat. Jerry started getting ill. When they finally came home, Jerry was in terrible condition. He was hardly able to walk. He went
to bed right away, The next day it was not Jerry who showed up to feed Beauty but it was Harry, his son. Also, the Governor came and asked how was Jerry. Harry said he was in bad condition. Governor suggested that he takes Beauty out while Jerry was ill. So that is what happened. A couple of days later Dolly brought news that they got an offer to stay in the house of their mother's best friend. So, the family was off and Beauty needed a new home. The Governor gave him to a man called Jakes. He didn't know much how to deal with horses and he torchered Beauty. This soon ended because Beauty succeeded to escape. He was sold to a cab owner.
His troubles did not yet end. This man was cruel and he forced Beauty to work all the time. Beauty started to annoy the man so he took Beauty to a market. There an old man with his son took him just because he was in bad shape and they knew how to cure horses. After the job was done, it was time for Beauty to find a new home, again. The old man knew a person who would take good care of Beauty. There she will stay till the end of her life and she will find someone who she thought she would never see again. I will not spoil the fun, you have to read it to find out.
Blog #4: What are the themes being woven throughout the plot line of the novel? How does the author do this? Is it enjoyable to each of you?
Some of the themes that occur through the novel are that you should treat living things the way you wish to be treated. Also, you should not harm people or animals in any way, if it is not necessary. The third theme is that you are the one who ends up as a coward if you do something bad to the weak and the innocent. The author expresses these ideas by showing us examples in various episodes in which these themes are described. She includes many stories about Black Beauty`s life that support these themes. We both like the morals of this novel and find them important to be remembered and respected by everyone.
