 Book: Catcher in the Rye
Author: J.D. Salinger
Pages:277
Genre: Classic

Partying, drinking, staying out late or just having fun, is what many teenagers now-a-days do, and so does Holden. After arriving to his hotel in New York, he decides to call up a hooker who turns him down, and so he goes to a bar. Everyone is either fat or around 40-50, except for 3 women, one blonde and two brunettes around the age of 30. Holden is very attracted by the blonde one who surprisingly even dances like an angel. However not one of these women is smart, actually they are probably the dumbest women Holden has met... and are pretty drunk. The only reasons the women are in that bar is to meet famous actors, therefor Holden makes fun of them, for example pretending that he saw an actor, and the women would go crazy. Already just reading the beginning of this chapter, I can guess what the upcoming story will be like and how Holden will spend his days.

One of the quotes I liked was:

·         “Old Phoebe. I swear to God you’d like her”-89. In a few pages the author describes Phoebe (his younger sister) as a young, full-of life 4th grader. She loves everyone and is the most affectionate child on earth. This quote shows that Holden has a tight relationship with his younger sister.
" In New York, boy,  money really talks- I'm not kidding"- Pg90. Holden says this quote when he enters the bar, he gets one of the worst tables even thought the bar is half empty, next time he will give the waiter a dollar. I know in some places money really counts, whereas in others people are just kind and warm heart-ed :)

What are some of the themes being woven throughout the plot of the novel?
In my and my dad's opinion the themes include:

  1. The Relationship between older and newer generations.
  2. Balance between school and family and how important it is to have them balanced for a bright future.
  3. First big personal choices- this is because Holden has now been thrown out of school, and he has to make choices of what he will do in New York until his parents find out.
My dad say the author puts it in a very natural way such as silly events, but the background scenario is deeper that it seems at the surface. I think the themes are enjoyable because I can relate to them, however sometimes maybe the author could have given less information and made it faster, however it is very interesting through out all the chapters.

  2. Really great. I totally agree with what he is going through in his teenage year. Understandable. I like that you put bullet points is adds a different set up.
