Since I read a little bit of Treasure Island, I am going to write about the other book I read during the book as well, The Lord of the Rings, (NOT Lord of the Flies). If one has read The Hobbit before this book, it would be much easier to understand, because many of Bilbo's adventures relate to the ones in this book. What happened in the book, The Hobbit, was that Bilbo, the main character of the book, was asked to come on an adventure to search for gold that was stolen by a dragon. Bilbo was a hobbit, a creature that hides itself from humans, and that walk around barefoot. They are quite nimble, and can creep up quietly behind a person, in order not to be seen. They are not always the most adventurous type, but Gandalf, a wizard dwarf, perceived that Bilbo was the right one for the adventure. And like he guessed, Bilbo managed to get the gold that was stolen. He was not the last hobbit to set on an adventure however.
Bilbo, during his journeys had couple of times narrowly escaped from goblins, and managed to save his friends, using a ring, hat enabled him to turn invisible. It was a great advantage to Bilbo, and a great curiosity to Gandalf. Bilbo had found the ring in a cave when he was running away from the goblins. There he met the Gollum, a slimy, skinny creature, that lived underground, and strangled other creatures for food. The ring that Bilbo found, happened to have belonged to the Gollum, who called it his "precious" or birthday present. Ever since he found out that Bilbo stole his precious, he immediately went after him. Gandalf of course had doubts about this ring. Long after Bilbo's adventure, he finally found and told the full story to Bilbo's cousin, Frodo. This is where the book starts. After Bilbo's second disappearance, the ring was given to Frodo. This was when he found out how evil the ring was. The true master of the ring was Sauron, a dark Lord, who created this ring. He called it the One Ring, which made him extremely powerful. When it was stolen from him, he never saw it again. The one who stole it was running away from enemies, with the ring on his finger, which made him invisible. But the ring slipped off into the depth of the river he was swimming in, and for centuries never heard of. Then one day two brothers were swimming in the lake, Deagol and Smeagol. When Deagol found the ring, his brother, whose birthday it was, wanted it so badly that he strangled his brother. When he possessed the ring, he found out he could turn invisible. From then Smeagol was considered evil, and was disliked by everyone, and soon was no longer referred to as Smeagol, but the Gollum. The ring apparently was putting a strong spell on the Gollum, who talked to it all the time, and called it his precious. When the Gollum moved underground, he strangled other creatures for living, with only his precious for company. But the Ring was evil, and it took hope out of creatures who possessed it, and then "slipped off." When it "ran away" from the Gollum, it came into the possession of Bilbo. Gandalf made Bilbo give Frodo the Ring, because the Gollum was after him, and in that case, so was the Evil Lord. He found out about his One Ring, and in order to gain power he wanted it back. Now that it belonged to Frodo, Gandalf told him of all the dangers he could be facing. Frodo then decided to leave his home, and find a way to destroy the ring. If he destroyed the ring, he would destroy the evil lord too.

  1. I have never really seen the movies, I have only seen the Hobbit. But it seems really interesting, and I will probably end up reading the books before seeing the movie :) Can you really read 1008 pages? Can't wait to see what happens next!
