Of Mice and Men

Name: Of Mice and Men
Author: John Steinbeck
Pages: 107
Genre: Classic/Fiction

It is a different experience talking about a book with an older friend. I think it is a fun experience though. The theme for this chapter is conflict. The book has many different things happening and it is complicated but easy to follow.

So far George and Lennie are dreaming about a house that they want to get in the country and live off the fatta the land (I don't know what fatta means either). I have noticed that the author makes the characters sound very western; for example the characters would say them like 'em. An old farm hand had his old, nearly blind, handicapped sheep dog shot and he will get a young puppy instead. Lennie wants a pup too and is very set on getting one from the litter that has just been born at the farm. Curley punches Lennie in the nose and in the face a couple of times and Lennie doesn't know what to do so he grabs his hand and then squeezes so hard out of fright that he crushes and breaks Curley's hand.

Quote: "Curley's fist was swinging when Lennie reached for it. The next minute Curley was flopping like a fish on a line, and his closed fist was lost in Lennie's big hand." In this part of the book Curley got made at Lennie for smiling while Curley was in an argument with Carlson. The sad thing is that Lennie wasn't even paying attention to their argument; he was still thinking about living off the fatta the land and raising pups and whatever else runs through the mind of big Lennie.

I will tell more in my next blog and I hope you guys have enjoyed what I have wrote about the novel so far.

  1. It is amazing that you are doing this project with a friend, probably more fun than doing it with parents :P However, very good description of what you have read so far. It is short but explain a lot about the book, great job!
