Report Section:

I read six to ten chapters over last weekend. I am writing detail about the six chapter because this chapter is the most important to me. In the chapter, when Manjiro squinted from the box, Jolly was picking his teeth with a small silver of baleen at there. Manjiro told Jolly that he saved the food in the box for his family. Then Jolly said to Manjiro snarly that Manjiro will never see his family again. Manjiro held Jolly's gaze and Jolly sneered at Manjiro. Manjiro couldn't do anything and just wondered about was Jolly lying or did he know something Manjiro didn't. Jolly funked to Manjiro with talking about the captain and said he could not go home again. Manjiro felt like the empty box. If Jolly's talking was true, if the captain boil them in big pots and skin Jolly, he will do same to Manjiro and Manjiro's friends. Denzo was right, he should avoid them and their cruel ways. Suddenly, the captain walked to Manjiro and talked to him. Originally Denzo was the leader of their group and he should be the one who spoke to the captain. But Denzo was like the others, did not want anything to do with the barbarians including learning their language. So it had fallen to Manjiro to interpret what the other said. Nobody helped Manjiro. Anyway the captain wanted to explain something and wanted Manjiro to tell his talking to Denzo and the others. The captain liked Manjiro as a friend and wanted to send Manjiro and the others to homeland of them. but Manjiro was Japanese. The captain didn't like Japanese. Because of Japan doesn't treat kindly to foreign visitors. That's why he could not send back them to homeland. Eventually Manjiro nodded for his talking with biting back tears and could not go home.

Response Section:
Actually before I read the book, I already knew the captain is kind person. And since the six chapter the captain would tell about him to Manjiro then would take Manjiro home easily. So I thought this chapter would be boring. But it was not. There was one amazing thing and thrilling!! The story was not happened only good continuation.

Passage Section:

I found my two favorite passages in six chapter. It was this "The day we found you, I had sent the men to look for turtles near your island. We didn't know you were there, but when the men saw you, they knew you must be fed or die"

Manjiro nodded. That was true.
The captain continued, "So they brought you back to the John Howland and I agreed to take you aboard, with the intention of bringing you back to your homeland, if that were possible. But I suspect you may be from Japan. If that is so, your country does not treat foreign visitors kindly. Once a ship named the Morrison tried to enter Edo Bay in order to return some shipwrecked sailors like yourselves, but before they could even explain the reason for their visit, they were fired upon repeatedly and were forced to retreat. I can't afford to lose the John Howland or jeopardize the lives of my men" the captain said.

I like these passages so much because when I read these, I could feel sincerely the captain's mind with truth. In the book, there were so many people didn't like and doubted the captain. So they didn't want to know the captain's real mind and even they wondered about him, nobody asked him the questions until now. Because of he looked like scary and they were scared and afraid of him. I know the captain didn't like Japan because Japan didn't treat well to the foreign visitors. However that's not his fault. So the many people thought the captain was bad person but it was not. These passages are threw out the stereotypes certainly.
