Blog Post #4 - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Jared Rogerson

This week I have continued reading the fantasy book, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, by JRR Tolkien. This week, I have read from page 199 - 249, out of 450.

Last time I posted, the last thing that had happened was that Frodo, Sam, and Pippin had met Strider in Bree-land, and had talked to him a bit. Right after that and moving on into what I read this week, they try and escape the next day. The thing is, they find out that all of there ponies had been stolen or scattered by the black riders, so they had no quick way to escape. The owner of the Inn said that he would try and find someone in town who was willing to sell them a pony, and came back without much luck. The only person that was willing to sell a pony, was selling it four 3 times its price, and the pony was old and could barely move. They took it anyway because they were desperate to get out and be safe, and they started on there way to Rivendell.

As usual almost immediately after they set out, something goes wrong. They travel for about a day, and then come up upon a large hill. On the hill they find a message that they think Gandalf made, that says that he had to go quickly because of danger. As it becomes night time, they feel the presence of the Black Riders, and Strider realizes that they were in plain sight the whole time. They find a little cave on the hill, and light a fire to stay warm and wait for the attack of the Riders.

In the middle of the night, they feel the presence of the Riders really strongly, and Frodo has an extremely powerful urge to put on the Ring. He gives into this urge, and vanished with the power of the Ring. As soon as he does, he is attacked by the Black Riders who are also invisible, and he is cut with a cursed knife. Right before Frodo passes out, he takes of the Ring. A while later, he wakes and feeling weak and weird because of the cursed knife cut, and he can't move. Strider thinks that the curse will turn Frodo into a mindless zombie of sorts, but he obviously hopes he is wrong.

After this ordeal, they set out again to Rivendell, and have few minor problems that aren't overall important to the plot of the story. This is where my reading ended for this week.

This book is getting more and more interesting, and more enjoyable, the more I read it. The author really develops the characters and the setting well, so you feel like you are actually in the story, and that you know the characters. He really created a teleportation device into the book!

The passage that I have chosen for today, is when Frodo has the sudden urge to put on the Ring, and he does, thus leading to him being attacked by the Black Riders. I chose this as my excerpt because it is an important part in what I read, and it shows that the Ring is getting ahold more and more on Frodo's mind. It also makes me wonder if when the time comes, he will get rid of the Ring.

He shut his eyes and struggled for awhile, but resistance became unbearable, and at last he slowly drew out the chain, and slipped the ring onto the forefinger of his left hand. Immediately, though everything else remained as before, dim and dark, the shapes became terribly clear. He was able to see beneath there (Black Riders) wrappings. There were five tall figures; two standing on the lip of the dell, three advancing.

After this part, they attack Frodo and cut him with the cursed knife. This is what I have read the past week and what I think about it. It really is a great book!
