The Fault in Our Stars #4

The Fault in Our Stars
John Green
Young Adult Novel
Pages read in total: 356/476
Hazel wakes up on her first morning in Amsterdam and is nervous to finally meet the author of her favorite book, expecting that she will finally find out what happens after the book abruptly ends. After knocking on his door, and waiting “A potbellied man with thin hair, sagging jowls, and a week-old beard” (p.274) opened the door, and then shut it into Hazel’s and Augustus’ face. They heard him talking to his assistant Lidewij, and saying that he didn’t really mean to invite them to Amsterdam and that he doesn’t want to meet them. Peter van Houten also appeared to have a drinking problem and is very rude to Hazel and Augustus. Hazel is at first very disappointed by Van Houten’s behavior but she thinks that life isn’t a wish –granting factory, so not everything can go the way you want it to. However, Peter van Houten soon lost his temper and Hazel and Augustus had to leave without their questions answered. After that they visited the Anne Frank house with Lidewij who was very sorry about what happened with van Houten.  The next day, at a café Augustus tells Hazel that his cancer returned and that he will probably die soon.

I now feel very sad because one of the main characters will probably die, but I think the ending of the book will have a really important lesson about Hazel continuing her life even though someone really important to her dies. For my further reading I expect the Augustus will probably die soon and Hazel will be really upset .I am satisfied with what I have read because even though this book is really sad it makes me want to read on, because it uses really good descriptions and the author really understands the characters, which makes their thoughts and dialogues really realistic.

Quote: “Some infinites are bigger than other infinites” –Page 289
This quote was said by Peter van Houten in the book and it made me realize that despite his drinking problem and unkind behavior he might have been a really good and smart person before something really sad happened in his life which made him change to what he is like now. This quote makes me wonder about what van Houten means by saying this and what happened in his life that made him this way.
