Blog Post #3 - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Jared Rogerson

I have continued reading the book The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien. I am still enjoying this book a lot, because the author takes the fantasy world in the book to a whole new level through the details that he has put in it. Since my last post, I have read from page 153 - 199, a total of 47 pages.

The last thing that happened before this part of my reading was when they were staying at Tom Bombadils house. In the part that I have read this week, they leave Tom Bombadils house and continue on their journey through the Forest. At midday, they lay down at a suspicious looking rock to eat lunch. They start feeling very sleepy, and they pass out. When they come to, they are in an Orcs cave hanging upside down and the Orc is getting ready to eat them. Frodo wakes up, but Pippin and Sam are still knocked out and they look like they are dead. Frodo sees a sword and grabs it and gets himself free, but then the Orc comes back. Frodo sings Tom Bombadils song and miraculously Tom appears singing and usual and saves them all. Then he sings a special song and Pippin and Sam wake up bewildered. Tom says that he will take them to the edge of the forest which he does, and then leaves to go back to his home.

After they travel the rest of the day, they arrive in a settlement called Bree-land. There they find a little inn called the Prancing Pony which they go to stay at. As they arrive there, the owner is very busy and they go into the common area. There, Frodo meets a strange man named Strider who I found out later in my reading is actually Aragorn. Pippin starts talking to much and Frodo gets up and starts talking before Pippin accidentally lets some important information about the Ring slip. The Frodo falls off the table and the Ring gets onto his finger, thus making him disappear. Everyone freaks out and this makes the suspicious people leave to go presumably tell the Black Riders. They then go into a separate room where they talk with the owner and Strider, and Frodo gets a letter from Gandalf. This letter tells Frodo that Strider is Aragorn and is Gandalfs friend. Then Merry runs in and tells them that he was kidnapped by the Black Riders and that they knew Frodo was there. Then the owner of the Inn gets there stuff from the room that they were supposed to say and moves it into a safer place where they hope the Black Riders can't get to them. This is where my reading for the week ended.

The book just keeps getting better and better now that there is action and mystery. Because of this, I am so far very satisfied with this book and not bored at all by it. As I have said many times, the author adds so many juicy details that make the book seem much more realistic, in turn making it a lot more interesting to read.

The passage that I have chosen for this week is when Frodo accidentally puts on the Ring, which starts the people to be suspicious about him and pretty much gives away his location to the Black Riders. I chose this section because it is very important to the book, and leads to a lot of other consequences like the Black Riders knowing where Frodo, Sam, and Pippin are.

The audience opened there mouths wide for laughter, and stopped short in gaping in silence; for the singer had disappeared. He simply vanished, as if he had gone slap through the floor without leaving a hole! The local hobbits stared in amazement, and then sprang to there feet and called for Barliman.
