ORR #5: Eva Peron

Eva in the hospital bed suffering from cervical cancer
Title: Evita: The Real Life of Eva PeronAuthor: Nicholas Fraser
Genre: Biography
Pages: 198

Cancer:
Eva was the second wife of the most powerful man in Argentina, Juan Perón. In 1950, at the age of 30 and the height of her popularity, she fainted in public. Initially she was diagnosed with appendicitis and had her appendix removed. But she continued to weaken and easily fatigue, and experienced profuse vaginal bleeding. Upon examination by her gynecologist, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. The finding was withheld from her and her adoring crowds on the orders of Juan. Many believe Juan kept the news quiet as he felt “Evita,” with her mega-wattage star power, was too important to his presidential election, and any weakness might influence the vote.

Eva’s fainting and heavy vaginal bleeding continued throughout the presidential campaign of 1951, and by November, Juan informed her that she would undergo surgery to remove her uterus, and that Argentinian surgeon Ricardo Finochietto would perform the operation. Once she was in the operating room and under anesthesia, instead of Finochietto, American cancer surgeon George T. Pack removed an extensive cancer of the cervix that had already spread to her abdomen. Before Eva came out of anesthesia, Dr. Pack was on his way to the airport to catch a plane back to New York. Again, under Juan’s orders, she was told she had a routine removal of the uterus that would correct the bleeding. She was never told she had cervical cancer, which would eventually take her life.

Describe 3 significant contributions that your figure made and the impact of each.
Eva Peron did many important things all throughout her lifetime. She became the first lady and started an organization, legalized divorce, and helped the poor and the workers, and helped give women the right to vote. And all of those things might seem minor, in a sort of world wide view, but Eva changed Argentina as a country doing all of these things. How would you feel if you got married young, and then the burning desire to be next to that person burns out, and you both realize, that it was a mistake, and that you shouldn't have got married at the first place, and now you two are stuck together "until death do you part", when you could be living happily on your own? Well because of Eva divorce in Argentina was an option, and that's pretty important, and for some people it's a life changing decision. By helping the poor people of Argentina and the workers, she also made their lives better, and less miserable. Those people now weren't only focusing on meeting the weeks end, but some other factors in life. Eva was also a big person in every woman's life in Argentina because by letting women vote, she diminished the picture of men being better, or more important in Argentina, and so women could express themselves, in one more way that they couldn't before, and it's all because of Eva.

What are the different awards and prizes that your figure has been awarded?
While on her tour of Europe called "The Rainbow Tour", she received from Franco the highest award given by the Spanish government, the Order of Isabella the Catholic. And in Spain, and throughout most of Europe Eva was very well welcomed by the people. And many people in Spain really came to love her, which reflects on the heartwarming person that she was.

Eva's funeral, and all the people
that attended it
Describe the death of your figure.
After having undergone a hysterectomy by the American surgeon George T. Pack, Evita's cervical cancer returned rapidly. She was the first Argentine to undergo chemotherapy (a new and experimental treatment at that time). Despite all available treatment, she became very sick, weighing only 36 kg (79 lb) by June 1952. Evita died at the age of 33, at 8:25 p.m., on 26 July 1952. The news was immediately broadcast throughout the country, and Argentina went into mourning. It is estimated to be that 3 million people have witnessed Eva's funeral, in the city streets of Buenos Aires.

  1. Eva Peron seems like a pretty strong and tough person or still being able to help all those people even though she was diagnosed with cancer. :)

  3. Your blog post was very interesting! Eva Peron sounds like a great human being, and it's very sad that she died so young, especially because she would have probably done a lot more in her life. I understand that at least having the option of divorce is very important, especially to women in Argentina who might be treated very bad by their husbands.
