Eileen Collins

Living History Person: Eileen Collins

Source: http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/collins.html

This is a very simple source. It is just the basic information about Eileen Collins. I chose this source because it was the first source I started with. It helped me get on track. It basically states that Eileen Collins was the first woman to command a space shuttle. Born in 1956, Eileen Collins was selected by NASA for their astronaut training program in 1990 and first flew in 1995. In 1999, on STS-93 on the Columbia space shuttle, Eileen Collins became the first woman space shuttle commander. ileen Collins earned her pilot’s license while in college. Her grades and flight experience helped her to become one of the first women to go straight from college into Air Force pilot training. She served as a pilot instructor and taught mathematics at the Air Force Academy. She has logged over 5,000 hours in more than 30 different types of aircraft. Collins became an astronaut in 1991, originally working in engineering support. With three space shuttle missions under her belt, Collins has two firsts: in 1995 she was the first woman to pilot a shuttle and in 1999 she became the first woman to command a shuttle mission. In 2005, she commanded NASA's first space shuttle flight since the Columbia tragedy.

QUESTIONS:

1. Describe 3 significant contributions that your figure made and the impact of each.

-Eileen Collins was the first female commander of a space shuttle.

-She taught many students about astronomy and many of them succeeded in astronomy.

-She proved that it doesn't matter the gender when it comes to getting the mission done! “Whether your commander is a man or woman doesn't really matter when it comes to getting your mission done.” ~Eileen Collins

2. What is one MORE unique thing you have discovered about your figure?

Since Eileen Collins was a child she dremt of being an astronaut, her family didn't have a lot of money to pay for lessons but everyday she would go to the airport and see planes takeoff and land.

3. What are the different awards and prizes that your figure has been awarded?

There are many. The one that I found most interesting is that she is in the Woman's Hall of Fame! Most people don't recognize Eileen as a great human being, but I was very happy and surprised at least some people do by putting her in the Hall of Fame.

  1. I think it's cool that both of our Living History characters showed that it didn't matter what gender you where and that girls could be as great if not sometimes greater then men.
