Coach K - Blog #4

Pages in Book: 320
Pages Read: 25
Book: Leading with the Heart - By Coach K

Summary:

Format of the text:

After every chapter, there is one page that has a title on it saying "Coach K's Tips". There, it gives basically the main points of what was in the whole chapter, some interesting quotes, and some "tips" he might have for the person reading the book, that would in this case be me. :)

Format of the text #2: (Inside the chapters)

Beginning:

In the beginning of every chapter, he would start off with a short story, and then go into the feelings, what he does with his players to motivate them, to make them want to play there best. Another thing that he starts out with is mostly dialogue or a quote from him, or someone that inspired him. (mom, dad, coach, player, friends etc.)

Subheadings:

Every single chapter would have a few subheadings, usually with the words in the title, like for an example, Leadership, When Friends Leave, Adversity, and so on. And under those subheadings, there would be dialogue, quotes and many life lessons.
In every chapter, there is a bunch of subheadings, meaning that in every chapter, there are many different topics that he talks about. (and that's where the "Coach K's Tips" come in handy if you got confused)

Blog Questions:

1. As I prepare to enter HS, how can I live my own life in a better way to fulfill the life goals I have for myself?

  • First, some of the ways that I could probably fulfill my dream and passion to get to the NBA, be successful in life are:
  • 1. Preparation
  • 2. Passion
  • 3. Hard work
  • 4. Dedication
  • and last but not least, 5. Have fun on the way to your goal, because your going to be very proud of yourself, and enjoy the life that you will have if you fulfill that goal.
  • One of the things that my role model Coach K, had taught me, is to treasure life, don't do stupid things that could slow you down to FULFILL that LIFE GOAL that you have. One of my favorite quotes from him is, "Life is like a but trip, if you let bad people, bad influences, on your bus, you wont go as far, but if you let good people, good influences, on your bus, you will go much further." This quote states that if you are influenced by bad people, it will be harder for you to acheve that life goal you have. If good people influence you, they will push you to do your best and get to that life goal quicker and more effectively.
2. What is one more unique thing you have discovered about your figure?

  • This year, the year of 2013, Coach K has bean rewarded with the Dick Enberg Award presented to him by the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Everyone, and I mean everyone, said that nobody deserves this award more than Coach Mike Krzyzewski. Some of his other awards in the course of his years as a coach are: (Wikipedia)
  • 1986, Basketball Times, CBS/Chevrolet, UPI National COY awards
  • 2001, Victor Award
  • 1986, ACC COY
  • 1997, ACC COY
  • 1999, ACC COY
  • 2000, ACC COY
  • 2010, Chris Phillips Award
  • 2001, Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall Of Fame.
  • 2001, Time magazine and CNN named Krzyzewski "America's Best Coach"; the award was not limited to any particular sport.
  • 2011, Sports Illustrated "Sportsman of the Year"
  •
  • Many people also say that Coach K was given these awards, but that is not true, he EARNED these awards. There is a big difference between RECEIVING and EARNING. When you receive something, you don't work for it, when you EARN it, you have worked long and hard for it.

3.Describe your figures mentors and special trainers.
  • Mike Krzyzewski became the coach with the most wins in the history of men's major college basketball on Tuesday, when his Duke Blue Devils defeated Michigan State, 74-69, at Madison Square Garden. The achievement, however, was not 'sealed' until a minute later, when Krzyzewski walked to the broadcast table and shared a quick thank you with the man who he had just over taken, Bob Knight, who had analyzed the game for ESPN. "I know a lot of people don't tell you this, Coach," Krzyzewski said. "But I love you."
  • As Krzyzewski spoke, Bob Knight had his face buried in Krzyzewski's suit jacket. Then he pulled back, smiled and said, "Boy, you've done pretty good for a kid who couldn't shoot." Knight laughed and slapped Krzyzewski hard on the shoulder. "I think that meant he loved me, too," Krzyzewski said later. "I'm going to take it as that."

  1. I really liked how you described how the book is written and how he gives you tips at the beginning of every chapter. It's probably especially helpful for you to read this book because you play basketball too and I'm sure there are some great ways to motivate yourself :) Maybe you should add an actual summary of the pages you already read, like not in general but what actually happened in the book.
