Title: Olive's Ocean
Author: Kevin Henkes
Number of pages: 217
Genre of Novel: Classic
The main character of this book is a girl called Martha, who went on summer holiday with her grandmother. Just before the school year had ended, a girl Martha had known called Olive, had just died in an accident. Olive and Martha were not really friends, however after the tragic event, Martha grieved she was never knew Olive properly. After receiving a letter with Olive's wish to have at least once seen the sea, Martha sets out to fulfil her wishes.
Martha had always loved her grandmother more than any one else in her family, and she was the only one she could really trust. She could have counted on her to tell her every secret, such as that she wanted to become an author. Martha decided to tell a story about Olive, how she wanted to see the sea and how her life was changing. As the time drew on, Martha saw how it was to be betrayed. She often thought of Olive, how everyone thought of her strange, how no one wanted to be her friend. When the end of the summer holidays came she finally decided what she would do. She would fill a glass with the water from the sea, and give it to Olive's mother. Hopefully it would reassure her a bit, and it also showed Olive's big wish.
I liked this story because it's really about friendship. Even though Olive died, and wasn't Martha's real friend, she thought of her still and tried to fulfil her biggest wish. Even though Olive was dead, Martha could not forget her. It shows how, even when one dies, one does not forget the person, nor their wishes.
