Values in Greek society

a) What values were most important to early Greeks and why were they considered important?

Early Greeks had a number of values that they considered important, and that were always showed in some way or another in their myths and legends. The Greeks encouraged all their citizens to have these values. They were intuition, hospitality, justice, ingenuity, loyalty, respect, teamwork and athleticism. All of these values were created during the age of Mycenaeans (the age of heroes). Those values were very important because they were the foundations of Greek society. By being excellent traders, rulers, and craftsmen, the ancient Greeks strived to become better citizens, and acquire more of the values that were depicted in all great Greek stories.

In what ways are early Greeks values found in modern society?

The values of Ancient Greeks are found almost everywhere in the modern times. One of the values that I think is the most appreciated today is ingenuity. Creative and innovative people are very honored in our society. This includes many famous artists, scientists, etc. Justice is also still very important. The court is a very important part of one country's government, and law is being enforced everywhere. Criminals are severely punished, depending on their crime. Athleticism is another one that is still very valued today. Great soccer , basketball, and tennis players can earn millions of dollars every year, and have much more income then average people. They are considered idols and role-models in our society, and some of them are famous world-wide. A value that is not as appreciated as it was in Ancient Greece is intuition. People do not trust their gut-instict anymore, but rely more on the facts to make decisions in life. Respect is another value that is still appreciated in our society. We are expected to respect people who are older than us, respect other cultures, religions, etc.
