Fever 1793

Title: Fever 1793
Author: Laurie Halse Anderson
Genre: Historical Fiction
Read/Pages: 49/251

This book, entitled Fever, is set in 1793 in Philadelphia during the epidemic yellow fever. The main protagonist of this story is Matilda Cook, a 14-year old girl living in Philadelphia with her hardworking widowed mother, war-fought grandfather and their slave, Eliza. Matilda, or Mattie, spends her days avoiding chores and making plans to turn the family business into the finest one Philadelphia has ever seen. But then the fever breaks out. As the disease sweeps the streets, destroying everyone along it's way. When Mattie's mother falls under the disease, she strives to help and survive. I haven't read so far yet, so I don't know what happens next, how this story ends, but I highly recommend this for students in middle school and high school, since it's terminology and parable is easy to understand, but placed in a historic time, which actually isn't that easy to understand.

I think that this is a really good book, so far, I've read 7 chapters and choosing this historical fiction novel was a successful choice. =)
