Gormenghast

Title: Gormenghast
Author: Mervyn Peake
Genre: Gothic Fantasy

So, currently I'm reading this book called Gormenghast, and it's a Gothic Fantasy, which I've never read before. It has a trend to be extremely descriptive, occasionally it's even overwhelming, keeping dialogue at minimal whilst this sea of words hits you smack in the face. The story is based in and around Gormenghast, a crumbling mountain fortress. Titus, heir the throne, deals with the hardships of castle life. Living with ghosts, your sister's a murder and your mum is a psychopath. Typical. It couldn't get worse until Steerpike, the ghost of the roofs, starts to come down the spiral staircase and in to the castle, all that follows is betrayal, death and suffering for the seven year old earl, Titus...
Wow, a lot of description, very overwhelming but very well written. Though it may not seem attractive at first, Gormenghast is well worth the read, but it would be WAY too dark for younger children. So, if you love a bit of darkness and ghosts, Gormenghast is for you.
