Crispin

Title: Crispin
Author: Avi
Genre: Historic Fantasy
First edition cover

Today I began and nearly finished Crispin the Cross of Lead. Crispin the Cross of Lead is part of the Crispin trilogy (at the edge of the world, and End of time.) Takes place in Stromford village in the medieval period of life. The story has a very engaging beginning a death, an attempt of murder and secrets being told. It starts of at a burial, the burial of Asta, Crispins mom, leaving Crispin with nothing but his faith. The burial is nothing special, almost nothing at all; Asta is put into a body bag and laid in a whole in the ground. After the "ceremony" takes place Crispin hurls himself into a forest in order to ignore his mother’s death, being the religious child that he is he is asking himself questions as to why God has chosen to steal his mother from him. To build on his bad fortune he trips and hits himself on the rock and is unconscious for an unknown period of time, as he wakes up and begins to regain his memory and where he is, he hears the steward talking to an unknown man about unclear things, but one thing was clear he wanted forgiveness and what had happened could harm many people. The steward was John Aycliffe he took power after the lord went away to fight for 4 years, John was roofless and allowed his own son to get be headed. Unfortunately for Crispen John Aycliffe had spotted Crispin spying on the meeting, and chased him threatening to kill him, at that point Crispin's luck changes for those couple of minutes, he is able to get away from the provoking enemy. From that point on Crispin is more or less in hiding. When the Steward returns to the town he frames Crispin for theft and proclaims him a Wolfs head, which means he is to be shot on site. The only person from then on that can help Crispin is the village priest, he keeps him safe and provides him with shelter, later on the book he hands Crispin a lead cross to him that belonged to his mother on the cross was his real name Crispen, (throughout the book he is only named Asta's son, until that point.) The priest states that he will reveal who Crispens father is, but before that can happen the priest is killed and Crispen is fleeing with the steward on his back.
