In his London studio the artist Basil Hallward puts the finishing touches on his portrait. Lord Henry who wasvisiting Basil, asks about the young man and his idententy Basil doesn't want to answer. Basil never says anything about his  paintings, because if he did it would blank his deepest emotions in his soul. However, Basil tells that the man of the portrait is Dorian Gray.Lord Henry immediately begins to influence Dorian suggesting that he should wealth and his youth and beauty while he has them, because they will soon disapper.Dorian wishes he could stay as young as he looks in the portrait, a short while later, he again wishes that he could stay young while the image in the painting aged.
