Title: Keeping the Moon
Author: Sarah Dessen
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Comments: At one point in her life, Nicole Sparks (Colie) and her mother Kiki, used to travel constantly due to lack of money, and were both overweight. Yet this changed when Colie's mum decided to join an aerobics class, which ends up changing both her and Colie's life. They end up both losing weight together and her mother reinvents her self, becoming, Kiki Sparks, world-renowned fitness instructor. When summer comes, Kiki's fame has risen and she is taking a tour around Europe. This means that Colie has to stay with her Aunt Mira in Colby, North Carolina. There Colie, meets Isabel, Morgan and Norman while working a a fast-food restaurant The Last Chance. Even after losing weight and her mother having a steady income, Colie is constantly plagued by her past, the teasing and snide remarks. Through the summer, by making new friends and building relationships Colie is able to break free from her past, embrace the present and anticipate the future.
This book was definitely not a bad read, but I can't say it was my favorite book. After reading a number of novels by Sarah Dessen, I find her books overlap and become quite similar, making none quite memorable. My favorite part of this book though, is that even though Colie loses weight she is unhappy, and then has to go and realize being happy is something that comes from the inside, and you have to work on yourself not only physically but emotionally to achieve it.

I was just watching a similar documentary movie, and it was very inspiring, because it sends this message: never give up. :) good book, and i'd love to read it.
ReplyDeleteAlthough something I would never even consider reading, I do like how you've given a critical yet in some ways positive analysis of the deeper meaning of the book. I'd like to find out what you mean by "her books overlap."
ReplyDeleteI wonder what the title of the novel stands for. Do you know how you can relate it to the book? Also, great message at the end- it helped me realize what being happy is all about, and how you can achieve it. I'm looking forward to reading this book.
