Title: Catching Fire (Part of the Hunger Games Trilogy)
Author: Suzanne Collins
Genre: Science Fiction/ Young Adult
Comments: I absolutely loved the first novel, "The Hunger Games" from the Hunger Games Trilogy. So when I saw this book, the second book in the series, I was very excited to read it. In the first book, the main character, Katniss Everdeen, lives in a dystopian world that is in North America, and is split into 12 districts (There were previously 13 but the 13th one was destroyed in a rebellion) Katniss lives in the 12th district and since her father died in a coal mine explosion she has had to provide for her family. In Katniss' world every year the Capitol (the richest and main part of the 12 districts) creates the Hunger Games, which takes 2 tributes from each district 2-12, which are teenagers age 12-18 that will fight-to-death in a arena while all the districts watch. Katniss' sister, Prim is chosen but Katniss, being fiercely protective of her, takes her place. She is chose along with Peeta Mellark. Through the games Katniss realizes to win she and Peeta must act as if they are in love, to gain support from the people watching. At the end of the games, when Katniss and Peeta are the only two left standing, they are told one of them must die. Yet since neither of them have to will to kill each other, they both take a poison berry and are about to eat it when the Capitol decides that two victors is better than none. This is where the 1st book ends and the 2nd begins. After winning the 74th hunger games Katniss and Peeta are going on the congratulatory tour of the districts. During this President Snow, visits Katniss at her home telling her that he is angry at both Peeta and her for threatening to commit suicide. He tells her that unless she can convince him that she and Peeta are truly in love, her family and Peeta's will suffer. After Peeta finds out about this he proposes to Katniss in public to try to convince people that they are in love. Yet there is new shocking news to come, in honor of the 75th Hunger Games Peeta and Katniss go back to the arena. The games is similar to the 74th except for the setting and the people. It is nothing out of the usual until Katniss makes a hole in the force field around the arena, and is carried away by her mentor, Haymitch, to district 13 (even though the Capitol wished people to believe it was gone). There she wakes up to find her longtime friend, Gale who informs her that, even though he got her family out in time, there is no more District 12. This is such a hard book to summarize because of the fact that there is so much detail and little things, that you just really need to read the trilogy to understand it. I recommend this book to people who liked Giver, Anthem and Uglies.

Maria, you book seems really interesting and complicated. When ever i here districts in a book, i always think of aliens or some other kind of life form.
ReplyDeleteHey, Maria! You finished it! It was really good, right? Catching Fire kind of forces you to read Mockingjay now, doesn't it? One thing that I really like about the Hunger Games series is that it centers around the Capitol and its need to control its districts. When it can't keep everything under control and the districts decide it's time for it to go, it can't stop them. I one time read one of these quotes it goes something like "Even a king fears the fickle crowd" or something like that, and this series totally proves that!
