The Breadwinner

Title: The Breadwinner
Author: Deborah Ellis
Genre: Fiction/Novel

In the book “The Breadwinner”, Written by Deborah Ellis, Parvana – the main character lived a regular life as a girl in Afghanistan. One day, the Talibs and the al-Qaida forces captured Afghanistan, and took away women’s rights. Women were not allowed to walk alone without an escort, because hey’d get stoned to death. Since Parvana’s father went to a University in England, the Talibs took him away and put him in prison. Parvana waited and waited to him to return, but there was no hope. While he was gone, Parvana had to “win the bread” so she dressed up as a boy and made money by reading and writing letters for the uneducated. As an 11-year old girl, she was able to be disguised as a boy, and lead an unique unwanted life – but was forced to, so her family could have money and survive.
I really enjoyed this book, since it is told from someone’s perspective but in 3rd person. Surviving a life that you were trying to avoid is really hard, especially when you have to act like someone you aren’t.

  1. I love stories set in places that I have never been. The Kite Runner, set in Afghanistan, was also really a great cultural story. Nice choice.

  4. Awesome, I love that in the book they are talking about woman's rights and how they dont have a thought in the world. Its also really cool that she disobeys the law.
