In this section of the book Hazel Lancaster (the main character) and Augustus Waters get to know each other better. Hazel introduces Augustus to her favorite book called 'An Imperial Affliction' by which is about a girl called Anna, who has cancer and the book ends in the middle of a sentence. The fact that the book ends so suddenly is one of the reasons why Hazel enjoys the book so much, it ends realistically, because Anna(the narrator) was either to sick to write more, or died. When Augustus finishes the book he is disappointed by the ending so he decides to email the author (Peter Van Houten) to find out what happens in the end. Meanwhile, Isaac, Hazel's and Augustus' friend is very upset because he will be having his eye operation next week, so he won't be able to see, and because his girlfriend dumped him saying that she wouldn't be able to handle him losing his eyesight. Soon, Isaac was out of surgery, and had no evidence of cancer, but he was still very upset when Hazel visited him. When she came back home she saw that she had a new email from Peter Van Houten, the author of 'An Imperial Affliction' which invited her to visit Amsterdam where he lives so he can tell her what happens after the book stops. After, this invitation Hazel decides that she really wants to visit Amsterdam but her doctors don't think its a very good idea because they're scared that she might get sick there. And really, in a few days Hazel ends up in the hospital because she feels pain in her head. However, there are no new tumors but the pain was caused by a lack of oxygen. In a few days she goes home but still really wants to travel to Amsterdam and calls her doctor to ask.
Response:
I think that I am really enjoying this book because of the way it is written, but it also made me really sad to think about all the people who are struggling with cancer. I like that in the book Hazel doesn't think about giving up her fight with cancer and is very strong. I think this reading fulfilled my expectations because I understood everything I read and because I enjoy the story. I think that in my continued reading Hazel will travel to Amsterdam and visits the author find out what happens in her favorite book.
Quote: 'Pain demands to be felt'- page 93
This is a quote from "An Imperial Affliction" that Augustus uses when trying to comfort Isaac. I think that this quote is very important because most people in the world do not want to feel pain and try to avoid it, each in their own way: some by running away from it, some by trying to forget about it, however pain should be felt and dealt with. This quote make me feel sad because I think of the pain of the characters in this book, but I think it is very important to understand.
