Title: Heart of a Samurai
Author: Margi Preus
Genre: Children's literature
Pages: 22/282
I read until second chapter over the last week. In the book, the main characters are Manjiro, Denzo, Toraemon, Jusuke and Goemon. They are same fishermen and Japanese. Especially Manjiro is the most important main character in this book. He wants to be Samurai. The samurai means the warrior in Japan in the past. Denzo, Toraemon, Jusuke and Goemon laughed at Manjiro because they think the samurai can't be anyone and also especially Manjiro was born into a fisher family, so now he is a fisherman and his son will be a fisherman. This is the way it has been, this is the way it will always be. In July of 1841 in Japan, when they were in a boat, they were hauling net for catching fishes. Suddenly, a storm was coming to them but they didn't notice. When they noticed, it was too late. So the boat rudder and sail were broken and lost oars for low the boat. Therefore they couldn't go to land so they had to drift at sea.
In chapter 1 and 2, there are no any my favorite passage -
