Across Five Aprils

Chapter 1 summary and review

The story sets time at planting season, April in southern Illinois, 1861. In the morning, Nine-year-old Jethro Creighton is plantng tomatoes with his mother Ellen while his brothers Bill, Tom and John plow other fields with his father Matt and cousin Eb in the pink sunrise. His mother is a small but strong woman who has lived through years of uneasy farm life. She gave birth to 12 children but lost 4 to death and the oldest has gone to search for gold in Clifornia. With the possiblity of impending war, conversation between the two parents reconstruct the history of family. They have hopes and concerns for the future. Jethro, a young boy is looking forward to the outbreak of war while his mother considers the consequences.

By the way Jethro talks, "get" -> "git" "for" -> "fer" I think he and his family are living in the countryside, and something about the war is going to happen in the future as the story unfolds.
