Summary
Skulduggery Pleasant: Kingdom of the Wicked starts off with the main character, Valkyrie Cain, trying to bring into custody an addled man who believes he's a butterfly. Regular mortals have suddenly been developing magical powers, and Valkyrie, as well as the rest of the magical community living in secret in Ireland, need to find out why. Afterwards, her and her partner, the detective Skulduggery Pleasant (a living skeleton- sort of an oxymoron) set off to bring in a man who has been turned into a werewolf. After they bring him in, it turns out that the man has some valuable information about the issue. He claims that a man who called himself Argeddion visited him in his dreams and showed him a light. Shortly thereafter, the werewolf discovered his true nature.
Meanwhile, the Elders (the leaders of the magical community) receive a visit from a man who has come as an ambassador from all the other magical communities of the world. He addresses the problem of the number of incidents that have happened in Ireland up until now. He tells them that the other communities are prepared to step in and 'correct' the situation. They give the Irish community seven days to decide.
When Skulduggery and Valkyrie return from their investigation, Ghastly Bespoke, and Elder and a good friend of the two detectives, brings them up to date on the situation. Once they finish speaking to Ghastly, a woman arrives, claiming to know Argeddion. In fact, she claims to have dated him.
Response
I believe that what I have recently read has fulfilled my expectations. I have read all of the previous books in the series, so I was expecting a complex plotline, as well as very good links and relations in between the characters. Also, I was expecting lots of humor, and I got that. Also, it seems like the plot is already beginning to weave things together, and I find it will be exciting as I read on.
Passage
"'The last present you gave me was a stick.'
'You wanted a weapon.'
'It was a stick.'
'It had a bow on it.'
'It was a stick.'" (Landy 47)
I like this dialogue because it illustrates the relationship between the two main characters, Valkyrie and Skulduggery, really well. They have a very close friendship, and are able to poke fun at each other without the other getting angry. I also liked it because it was very funny, as are many passages in this book, which I enjoy very much.
