Outside Reading Post (1) Hunt For Red October

Hunt For Red October

Title: Hunt For Red October
Author: Tom Clancy
Genres: Novel/Action/Suspense
Percent read: 16/100

Summary:

At this point in the book the main and supporting characters have just been introduced, however not nearly all the characters in the book. Marko Ramius a soviet submarine captain of Lithuanian blood has just been command of a soviet submarine named "Red October" known only to the Americans and their allies as a Typhon-Missile class submarine. The Red October in equipped stealth propulsion system that makes audio detection extremely difficult.

Jack Ryan is Ramius’s American counterpart and also a high-level CIA analyst. Ryan goes to Washington DC to deliver photos taken of the Red October’s hull and Ryan and the Joint Chiefs of staff later conclude that the purpose of the Red October’s Stealth technology is to sneak into American waters and launch missiles. In a panic they start to organize a plan.

Furthermore I noticed that Ramius despises the Soviet Union for several unknown reasons (so far). In fact he even goes so far to kill his political officer on board the Red October and then say the crew cannot contact Moscow because they have strict orders not to break radio silence.

Response:

So far I really like and enjoy reading this book. The book is full with military facts and accuracy while still maintaining a sort of suspense and action.

I predict a major plot twist later in the book that will change everything and make the book all the more exciting to read. All in all The Hunt For Red October has more than filled my expectations thus far.

Passage:

The October's size was deceptive. The interior of her double hull was crammed with missiles, torpedoes, a nuclear reactor and its support equipment, a huge backup diesel power plant, and bank of nickel-cadmium batteries outside the pressure hull, which was ten times the size of its American counterparts." (The First Day, Friday, 3 December 3%)

I chose this passage because I fell it gives an incredible description of what the Red October is like. This passage really intrigued me because this is the first time as a reader I could get a feel for how the October worked and what its components were.
