The Fault in our Stars 1

Title: "The Fault in Our Stars"
Author: John Green
Genre: Young Adult Novel
Number of pages read: 79/476

The main character and narrator of this book is a 16-year old girl named Hazel who got lung(thyroid) cancer when she was 13 years old. She survives the cancer due to experimental medicine that worked on her. She goes to Support Group which is a place where other children/teenagers who have cancer meet and discuss their problems. She doesn't go to school because she finishes high school early and already begins to take college education. In the Support Group she has a friend called Isaac who lost one eye due to cancer at a young age and will soon have to get an operation on his other eye, which will make him blind, but will completely remove the cancer. Hazel doesn't really enjoy going to the Support Group meetings because she found them depressing but one day during the meeting she sees that a boy who never went to the meetings before was there. She finds out that he is Isaac's friend and was there to support him and because he has also had a touch of cancer. After the meeting Hazel and the boy (called Augustus) start talking and find out that they have very similar interests, so he invites Hazel to watch a movie.

This book is different from the books I usually read but I enjoyed it because it is very clear and I find the story very interesting. I also really like the word-choice and dialogue in this book because it's very realistic to how teenagers talk today. For my further reading I expect that Hazel and Augustus will spend more time together and become really close, and that probably something tragic will happen at the end of the book such as a death of one of the major characters.

Quote:
"So what' your story?" he asked.
"I already told you my story. I was diagnosed when-"
"No, not your cancer story. Your story. Interests, hobbies, passions, weird fetishes, etcetera."

This passage shows the character of Hazel, because she thinks that other people are only interested in her cancer story and the character of Augustus because he only cares about who a person truly is.
