The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Author: John Boyne
Number of Pages: 216

"With the other Jews, Bruno. Didn't you know that? That's why they have to be kept together. They can't mix with us"

The boy in the striped pajamas is a bout Jews and German and the relationship between them. Bruno is a 9 year old boy and moved all the way from Berlin to another place... far from his three best friend, their house, the stores in the middle of the neighborhood and came to Out-With. His dad is a Commander at the army and works for the Furry. He has a sister called Gretel that is 12 years old and a mother that her name is not provided. In Out-With he has no friends and no one to talk to so one day he decides to take a walk and that's when he finds Shmuel. A boy his age that looked like him but was more skinny and looked pail. Bruno really wanted to play with him just like he did back in Berlin but the fence was separating them. He never knew really why was the fence there and why the boy and the rest of the people on the other side of the fence had to wear striped pajamas. So he decided he would discover it by himself. The day before he was supposed to move back to Berlin he asked Shmuel to bring him a pair of striped pajamas so he could sneak in and since he had shaved his head too, because of lice, he looked more Jew that ever except the fact that he was a little bit... not skinny. When he made it to the other side unfortunately for both boys it was time for march. Bruno had no idea what was going on and he supposed that the 'kind' soldier were taking them to a building so they wouldn't catch a cold from the rain... After that march, Bruno was never seen again. Neither was Shmuel.

I really loved this book. It was so easy flowing and I read it very fast. I like the mystery that it had but I want to see had actually happened to them. Although I have some ideas that are not that exciting I hope they show it in the movie (that i just found about it) and I really want to watch it. I definitely recommend this book to everyone.

  2. It's the saddest book I've read. I also watched the movie, which is also sad like Helene said.
