Quote from the book: “There
was a chance I might start to like it
here. And maybe that- not him- was what I’d always feared most of all.” I chose
this quote, because it is the last line of this book, although this is only the
first one in a trilogy. I really want to read the other two books too. This
quote was interesting, because Pierce is talking about how she might start to
like the Underworld, and that that was what she actually feared- not John! It
makes me wonder what will happen in the next novels.
The Story: Pierce is now “together”
with John, as far as a seventeen year old girl can be together with a death
deity. This happened, after they talked in Pierce’s garden in the middle of the
night, because Pierce came outside to rescue a drowning lizard from her pool.
Now Pierce at least doesn’t have to think about why John hates her; it was
never actually the case.
But now, Pierce has to deal with other things. Her mentor from New Pathways; the program she participates in at school; Jade, got killed in the cemetery the other night, and only Pierce knows who it was: a fury, which are souls of people that died and weren’t happy with where they ended up- that’s why they try to make the death deity’s life as horrible as possible. The death deity is John in this case, and because the furies know that he loves Pierce, they wanted to kill her. Unfortunately, they thought Jade was Pierce!
Then, it turns out that one of the furies possessed Pierce’s grandmother, and John gets so worried that he forces Pierce back to the Underworld. Now, although Pierce is not dead, she is captured in the Underworld, and although it isn’t that bad because John will see that she gets everything she wants; she desperately wants to find a way to escape. That’s where the novel ends- and I am excited to read the next one!
