 Quote from the book:  I jumped as Peeta gripped my shoulder from behind. "No," he says. "Your not risking your life for me." I picked this quote because this is where Peeta shows his real love for Katniss. In this qiote you can see how much he cares about her and how his love for her is real, not fake. 

What happened so far: Katniss climbs up a tree where she is safe and secure. She comes across a couple voices, talking about how they have killed one of the tributes. They were the Career Tributes, the ones who practice before the training at the Capitol starts, and to her surprise Peeta was within that group. At this point Katniss is close to dieing of dehydration, however she travels a long distance and finds a pond. That night she doesnt wake up to the song of mockingjays or the trickle of water, but to stampeding feet and a wall of fire.

Katniss scrambles to get out of the tree and to the ground ready to run. She can tell that these flames are manmade, that the Gamemakers are creating them in order to drive the tributes closer together so that the watchers don't get bored of the games.She outruns the fire but the Gamemakers shoot fireballs at her, and one catches her calf as she jumps behind a rock to save herself. She cleans her burns in a spring-fed pool of water, but finds it hard to venture away from it. The relief is too great in the cool water and the pain is too intense when she removes her calf. Since she can’t appear weak in front of her sponsors she drinks some water and climbs up a tree. She is disturbed by the sound of the Careers talking about trying to kill her. Peeta suggests that they wait for her to come down, she can’t stay in that tree forever. 

While the Careers are sleeping, Katniss spots Rue in the tree across. She points to the wasp nest right above Katniss. It is one of the Capitol's muttations, a tracker jacker is a type of wasp which leave stings that swell up a lot, and possess venom that causes hallucinations and is so strong that only a few stings can kill a person. Katniss realizes that the nest is her only hope of escape, so she climbs up to the branch from which it hangs and begins sawing the branch off. She saws until the anthem ends so that the Careers and Peeta below her won't know what she's up to. She will continue later at dawn. When she climbs back down to her sleeping bag, she finds her first gift from her sponsors. It is cream for her burns. Dawn came and Katniss sets the branch free but is stung 3 times. Even though Katniss is woozy she runs back to Glimmer, a Career, to get the bow and arrow since she is dead. She hears the running steps of the Careers and sees Peeta telling her to run for her life, when she has no energy left to run she curls up in a pit and thinks about how Peeta Mellark has just saved her life.

When Katniss wakes up she sees Rue by her side, curing her stings. Katniss thought she could use an alley. She starts thinking about how maybe Peetas love for her is not just an act about the Careers and all of their supplies and realizes that, as these are the Hunger Games, it's time that the Careers went hungry. They make a plan, Rue will distract the Careers by setting fire to different trees, and Katniss will be waiting for them to leave and destroy all their supplies. Katniss succeeds however Rue had to face her death. Katniss and is mad at the Capitoland wonders if there's a way for her to do it. She recalls Peeta's words about showing the Capitol that he's not simply a piece in their Games. Katniss covers Rue's face with flowers and presses the three middle fingers of her left hand against her lips and holds them high in the air, saying goodbye to Rue. She decides that she will make the Careers pay for Rue's death. A gift comes to her: an unfamiliar loaf of bread. Katniss knows that it's from District 11 thanking her, since Rue is from that district.As she falls asleep that night Claudius Templesmith, the announcer, makes a change to the rules: This year, two tributes can win, so long as they come from the same district. Katniss calls out Peeta's name before she can stop herself.
