Memoirs of a Geisha

Title: Memoirs of a Geisha
Author: Arthur Golden
Genre: Historic Fiction
Plot:
This book is about a very poor Asian family who were very wealthy, but lost their wealth in poker. They had two children one very young baby and a two-year-old. They decided to sell thir children as slaves to gain money and so they don't have to feed a lot of them. The sisters were sold in two different families. As the baby grew it got a name Chio Sakamoto. She was a very beautiful girl who never had money and would always get leftover's from the food the family had. She was in a horrible family that always bossed her around, they would usually use a whip to get her to work. Chio would go outside every morning and buy the family food, she would meet a 20 year older guy called the Chairman, who she falls in love with. As Chio grew up, she would work harder and harder for the family who had a single daughter who was very spoiled and wanted everyhting to herself. She had everything in life except for a heart and beauty, that's why she was jealous of Chio. Her name was Hatsumomo. When Chio turned 11 she stopped seeing the chairman. At the age of 11 she found out that her birth sister ran away from her family she was sold to and died. When Chio grew up and turned 17 the Chairman was passing by houses looking for beautiful women and saw her. He decided to take her to traing to become a Geisha. This si what Hatsumomo always wanted and started making plans of how to kill Chio. Whenever Chio would come back from practice, Hatsumomo would pusher down the stairs, burn the house, or similar. To break Chio's famous chain, Hatsumomo would convince her mother and other slaves to organize a wedding for Hatsumomo and the Chairman. Just as about they were about to get married, Chio and the Chairman recognized each other organizing a wedding for themselves. hatsumomo was devastated. Mameh was Chio's mentor and trainer and was as close to her as her own sister. She trained her Geisha dance, but also life lessons. At the end Chio becomes a very famous Geisha called Sayuri and Mameh adopts her. My favorite quote from this book is: "I want a life that is mine!" this was said by Chio (Sayuri) who wants to be free and not have people boss her around. She wants something that everyone deserves, freedom, and this book says that freedom is the most powerful factor of life and lets you spread your wings and fly.
