The Ghost at the Table

Title: The Ghost at the Table

Author: Suzanne Berne

Genre: Fiction

Comments:

This novel has 292 pages. I remember reading this one year ago, but I can hardly remember what it is all about. I've read the first 50 pages, and it was very haunting because I had a nightmare about it last night. This book is about Cynthia Fiske, a girl living in California aloof from her family back in Massachusettes. Her sister begs her to come back to Massachussettes for Thanksgiving because her father is dying and his second wife is divorcing him. The girls' mother died mysteriously, it was either because of a car accident, or she commited suicide. Nobody knows.
Cynthia decides to come back to Massachusettes. While eating at a dinner Table with some relatives, Cynthia and her sister get sucked into a magical whole where they can recall about what has been happening in the past one hundred years during Thanksgiving. Once they come back to normal, they have to decided whose memories are faulty, of course, not telling anyone.
Obviously this book is adventurous, dramatic, beautifully written and a fully haunting novel which I would reccomment for readers at the age 13 -25 to read. I actually rememberd what this book is about!
The author, Suzanne Berne lives with her husband and two daughters in Boston. For a couple of years she lived in California, like the main character in this book. Berne's first written book was A Crime in the Neighborhood where she won an Orange prize for fiction. The way I think she writes is simply perfect- she uses a large variety of verbs and descriptive language. I learnt many new words while reading this book. This novel is also very intriguing- once you start, you can't stop. I hope I find other books to read written by Suzanne Berne!
