Water for Elephants

Title; Water for Elephants
Author:  Sara Gruen
Number of pages read: 105/335

The story continues where it left off. It goes back for a short period to Jacob at his age now, 90. Jacob is very excited because he gets to go to the circus which is his passion and something he truly loves, He nurses are taking great care of him. When it's time to go to dinner Jacob refuses to sit at his normal seat because of a  guy that he before had a fight with. He makes a huge deal out of this a gets another pill to his pill collection. This pill is meant to be for depression. The story after this gets back to young Jacob. Jacob is an almost vet and he gets a special deal from Uncle Al. If he doesn't rescue Marlene's horse who could die any day, he will get kicked out of the circus but if he saves him he will get paid 9 bucks each week and also will stay at the circus. After this Uncle Al, Jacob and a few others went in a search of new performers. When Jacob comes back he sees a letter inviting him to Marlene's and August's dinner. August is one of their friends who also works at the circus. When he comes to their dinner everything is great and nice. August even gives him a really nice tux to wear. When Marlene and August dance, August is a very nice person and super loving but after a few minutes he turn to his cruel man who almost him her. When everyone leaves and goes to bed Marlene and Jacob stayed a talked for a while. The next day both Jacob and Marlene go to visit her horse and decide that they should put him to sleep for the best. After this August fed the horses, lions and tigers meat which didn't please Jacob that much. The story at this point gives the readers a little hint about he relationship between the characters.

I think that so far the book is pretty good and still the setting really helps me visualize everything that is happening. The story began giving us a little more details about August, how he really isn't such a nice person. I think that in the rest of the book there might be some conflict between August and Jacob. Also Jacob and Marlene have been getting along pretty well.

"You have to understand something about Auggie," she says, "and I don't quite know how to explain it." I lean forward. "Try." "He's...mercurial. He;s capable of being the most charming man on earth. Like tonight." I wait for her to continue. "And...?" She leans back in her chair. "And, well he has..moments. Like today."

This passage explains both August and a little bit about him and also the tension and new friendship happening around Marlene and Jacob. I really liked how the author used the word mercurial to explain someone's personality.
