Summary

Its 1939, two guys, Barney Young, and Calvin Chin live in Chinatown of San Francisco. They are very poor, so they play basketball for their living. At the beginning of the story, they started a match against two white guys. They aren't better than Barney and Calvin. Calvin and Barney try to make them think that they play really bad, to put in more money for a bet. When they put determined amount of money in the game, Calvin, the narrator, and his best friend Barney start playing the real game. That scam works almost always, as well as this time. Everything they make from playing basketball, they spend on their girls, and barney gives it to his grandpa, called Grandpa Joe.
They ran out of the money, so they went to the school yard and started shooting on the basket, but they were playing so clumsy, to get people attraction, to play with them. Two guys saw them playing  so they joined them. But this time, it was different. When they started playing, some other guys came into the yard to watch them. When Barney and Calvin started playing real basketball, two of the guys that were watching left. They recognized cheating from Calvin and his friend. Calvin's plan was that when they finish the game, they just escape. So they did it. As soon as game was finished, Calvin and Barney started running toward the exit, but all of the guys already prepared their fists for the fight, so they started chasing them. When Two best friends cam out of the yard, car stopped. Two guys that left, Mr. Stiffy, and Coughlan, called them inside. They went in as fast as they could. Mr Stiffy told them his real name, Topper Tom. They recognized him, he was the guy that played for Chinese All Stars. They started explaining to Barney and Calvin how good they are, and invited them to play basketball around the country with them. So the conversation began. Barney wanted to go so much on the trip, but he couldn't go without his prater  Calvin. Calvin did not want to leave his father and Grandpa Joe, and Calvin never left from Chinatown, so that was weird to him. Topper and Coughlan let them think about it over he night, so they invited them to the gym in Japanese part of the town. Calvin and Barney went to their friend Jean. Barney, Calvin, and some other guys played Jean, the girl , and her friends. They needed to play girl rules. After hard work, they lost against the girls. As soon as they finished, parade started, which marks the beginning of China attacking Japan. There was a local Japanese store that is selling souvenirs, so they started attacking it. Grandpa Joe stopped them, saying that the poor man that is running the store, haven't done anything to them. Finally they went through Chinatown singing and dancing, leaving them man alone. Calvin and Grandpa Joe sat on the sidewalk, and started talking about the occasion that just happened. Calvin told him that he got offered a job, to play basketball around the country. Calvin was surprised that Grandpa Joe suggested that he should go. When he finished conversation with Grandpa Joe, he went to see Jean, while working in the restaurant. She told her the same thing, and she told him to stay, to fin the job here, in San Francisco, but he started complaining how only white people get jobs.

Response Section

So far, I really like this book because its about basketball. I enjoy playing sports and especially basketball. Everything is fine about the book, but only thing i don't like about it is that its using some slang words that are unknown to me. Its like whole different language, but I still enjoy reading this book, a lot. I like that this book is about two best friends who try to make some money for their living, and they get offered for a job, but only problem is that they have to go across the country, far away from their homes, which bothers Calvin. Calvin is asking important people in hi life for suggestions, and he gets different responses from two different persons, from his friend's grandfather, and from his girl best friend. Grandpa Joe told him to go, and Jean told him to stay. Which path should he follow, his hearth, or his brain? My recent reading has fulfilled my expectation. I really like what happened so far in the book, and how book is resolving about more than one problem. It is very interesting. I think that Calvin and Barney will accept the offer, and that they will get in lots of troubles, and have of course lots of fun. I am really satisfied of what I read so far.

Passage Section

"I'm Barney Young." Barney jerked a thumb at m. " And this is Calvin Chin."
This was the first time of the story where its mentioned narrators name. It was the time when  Barney and Calvin got into the car with Topper Tom and Coughlan. They introduced themselves, or Barney introduced both of them.
