The Ravenmaster's secret #2

The Ravenmaster's secret

Elvira Woodruff

Historical novel

62/214

Describe

In the next morning, Forrest was feeding rats to the ravens. Then his only friend Rat came in. Rat is an orphan who works as a rat catcher under Master Meek. At first, Forrest didn't approach Rat like the others since he is dirty but Tuck, who has the ability to sense whether someone is kind or not connected them. Rat was even smaller than Forrest and due to his poverty he wore dirty cloths and walked around in bare feet. He and Rat were the only ones who could understand each other and they went off into their own worlds together often through the foggy spyglass Forrest had.

Forrest talked about how he couldn't see the last moment of the execution and he still feels uneasy killing rats. Rat sympathizes and says "Wot if it was me own neck in that noose?". Forrest is relieved and moves on to talk about getting a Scottish rebel prisoner and how rat is lucky to be a rat catcher than a chimney sweep who went up to very high and dangerous chimneys to clean it. Eventually they go on an imaginary adventure through the spy glass after the talk.

When they were busy on their adventure, Tuck sensed a very bad personality and let out a "kek kek kek". The person Tuck sensed was Simon Frick, the tower's chimney sweep. He was a tall, thin man in black clothes with brooms and pokers over his shoulders. He said he was glad to see Forrest and Rat and he asks Rat if he has ever climbed a chimney and Rat answers no. He said Rat would be small enough to fit in a chimney and that the fact that he has never climbed a chimney will very well change. Forrest mutters under his breath "Go back up your chimney" and Simon hears it. He asks Forrest if he said it to him and Forrest denies. He gets angry and took out a knife. Simon warns Forrest that "Lie to me and I will know" and "Interfere with what is mine or about to be mine and you will regret the day you did". He adds "Have you ever tasted a raven?" which freaks him out even more and leaves.

When Forrest was taking care of the kindling, his mother comes to him and informs him that the prisoner will be coming by a boat at Traitor's gate and gives him tasks to complete. At the Traitor's gate, people were blooming and the prisoners come. The first one was a huge man who carried himself with a warrior's pride and Forrest was glad for he won't be bullied anymore if he got such a dangerous prisoner. The second one was the same except for a nasty scar. The third one was a little girl about his age whose lips were trembling but still had pride. His father came from his back and told him that the "wench" is their new prisoner".

He leaves with Rat and kicks a wall saying he is cursed to have a little girl as a prisoner for he will be bullied for it. They talk about their economical status about how Forrest was living in a warm cottage with his parents while Rat was a rat catcher working under master Meeks with the possibility of being sold to someone like Simon Frick. They plan to go to the Bloody Tower together where the "wench" was imprisoned with a supper for her. They also wonder if she is rich enough to afford food for herself for some prisoners were rich enough to live a luxurious life inside a prison.

Reflect

It was interesting to see how Forrest got a little girl as a prisoner when he thought of a huge Scottish rebel would be his prisoner. He said he was cursed for he will be bullied for that matter. I think he has some hardships coming to overcome because of that and I am looking forward to reading on.

Passage

“But as he watched his father walk away, all Forrest could think about was what Finch and the others would say once they heard that their new prisoner was a girl.”

This is what Forrest is afraid of and is his main problem. This is a reaction when his father told him that the little girl will be their prisoner. I thought this passage is important because it shows Forrest’s feelings towards the matter.
