Chronicle of a Death Foretold - Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Blog Post No. 2)

Chronicles of a Death Foretold
Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Genre: Crime Fiction

Number of pages read: 43/120

Summary: The part of the book that I just finished reading focuses mostly on Bayardo San Roman, who was then a newcomer to the village. He said that he was going around villages searching for a woman to marry. He tried to demonstrate all of his abilities and show himself in the best possible way: he organized a swimming competition and won, he was friendly towards everybody, and he tried to look nice. When he found Angela Vicario, he fell in love with  her, even though she did not like him. He asked her tell him the house she likes the most in the village. When she responded, he immediately approached the owner and tried to buy it. When he failed at his attempt, he tried once more, but he failed again. The amount of money he offered to the man, made his health drop down, so he died. After he died, Bayardo San Roman bought the house. He tried to organize a very large and grand wedding, so he spent 9 000 pesos only on the first half of the preparation. He invited many people and made sure everyone was satisfied, especially his wife. Santiago Nasar accompanied Bayardo San Roman during the preparations. Bayardo San Roman's family arrived. His father was a very important figure at that time, he even had a Medal of Valor. His mother was declared the most beautiful woman in all of the Antilles. His two sisters also came.

Reflection: I came to like the book because it turned out to be very interesting. I like it how there aren't many descriptions, but only action. This makes it very easy for me to read. I read 29 pages of this book in less than half an hour. I can't wait to read more!

Passage: " 'Love can be learned too' "

This is the phrase Angela Vicario's mother said when Angela was complaining about how she does not like Bayardo San Roman. I chose this phrase to describe the cold heartedness of her mother. Love is an emotion, so it cannot be learned. It cannot be forced, not even with strong will. It comes naturally. Angela's mother does not think so, as if she does not have emotions.
