Summary:

Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier is set in the United States during the American Civil War. The main character is referred to as Inman, a confederate soldier who is wounded. The story opens through the eyes of Inman who is in a Confederate military hospital in North Carolina. He was wounded in battle and aspires to go back to his hometown and girl. Also he is tired of the war because of several reasons. For one he simply doesn’t believe in what he is fighting for. Also he has seen the harshness of war and he longs to go back to his wife who was separated from him because of the war. As a blind soldier dies right in front of him he receives advice to leave and not to risk his own life for this war. At the end of this first section, he begins thinking about deserting, which can get you killed and is illegal.

Throughout this section I noticed that Inman was not only wounded physically but also physiologically. Although he remains honorable and heroic on the outside his dreams and nights are haunted by images of dead confederate soldiers and the horrific Civil War battles.

Response:

To me the section I read this time was very strange because as the story has just begun Inman seems very distraught and torn between his loyalty and passion but can’t seem to make up his mind. Also there is a lot of context in the story which can make the book a little hard to fully comprehend.

I predict in future reading that Inman will choose to desert and there will be many problems along the story. Also I think new characters will be introduced soon.

This quote describes how Inman feels about the war and fighting for the South. As a reader I feel this quote rewards me by giving a sense of perspective on Inman’s part.
