In humanities we have been
studying about architects and their achievements, interior designs and as well
sustainability. My architect was Frank Llyod Wright, I read a few articles
about him, his life and way of architecture. Reading about him I learned about
new styles of architecture, such as Organic and Prairie.
He once wrote “The prairie has a beauty of
its own and we should recognize and accentuate this natural beauty, its quiet
level. Hence, gently sloping roofs, low proportions, quiet sky lines,
suppressed heavy-set chimneys and sheltering overhangs, low terraces and
out-reaching walls sequestering private gardens,”. The uniqueness of this style was: low-pitched
roofs, low bands of windows, wide wood bands and an open floor plan, where
everything expands from the central fireplace. A great example of one of his
buildings built with this style is the Robie House, Oak Park studio designed in
1908.
Due to this project I had to look
back into one of the books I already wrote a post on, it is the "Smart
Apartments", in this book different apartments are displayed, explained in
a few words and every apartment has a floor plan to it. I really like architecture and designing houses because I think it is a way of being creative and designing whatever you like. There were a few houses I liked such as the 'Apartment on Central Park' in New York or the Monolocal, however the one I liked the most was probably the Timber House.
Timber House by
Makiko Tsukada located in Tokyo, Japan is an apartment nearly 100% out of wood.
The interior furniture, shelves and stairs are all made of different shadings
of wood. Instead of having all white this designer decided to use colors from
white -->
yellow --> brown
and all in-between those. The windows in this apartment are thin but tall, and
the living room is on the upper floor to make the most of the light and
increase possibilities of breezes. This house contains a lot of free space and
creativity with the furniture. In an aesthetic point of view, the apartment
looks very appealing, it has a lot of light, free space, different colors
making the apartment ‘happy’, and it is well thought out. Building this
apartment however must have taken a lot of wood -killing trees, hurting the
environment- otherwise however the house is surrounded by many trees and green,
but then again the book mentions no 'functionalities' or 'unfunctionalities' however it does include doors and is accessible.
After all, I really enjoy designing and anything connected with architecture. I do not wish to grow up being an architect, however I have always enjoyed drawing houses, furniture and so on.
This blog post was interesting. I hope that you get a good grade on the humanities project.
ReplyDeleteI did the same architect as you but i wrote about his falling water house which was one of the best houses in the world. Although i liked reading about another of his styles.
ReplyDeleteyour architect sounds really exciting and has lots of great buldings. I really liked your pictures. I think it's really nice that you put a picture in your post. It makes your post more interesting to read.
ReplyDeletei find it interesting that you posted about the project we did in humanities. i also chose frank lloyd wright, i think he has an awesome style. I like that you described the house, but he often gives his houses really weird and unusual names.
