Title: Amber Brown- Is Feeling Blue

Author: Paula Danziger

Genre: Fiction

Comments:

This week I've decided to read something I wouldn't normally read, just for the sake of my "comfort zone." The book, 'Amber Brown is feeling blue' is about a girl called Amber. Her parents divorced about three weeks ago, and her dad moved to another country. Just a few days ago he came back to celebrate Thanksgiving with his girlfriend. Obviously, her mother has a boyfriend and she is planning on celebrating it too. Amber would like to celebrate it with both of her parents, but that would be impossible because they are divorced. Now Amber must choose which parent to be with over the holiday, and the agonizing decision complicates every aspect of her life.
Reading this book made me remember the good days I had when I was a small child, even though I didn't make so many decisions like Amber because I was too small.
I would reccommend this book for kids below the age of 10. It's not that I really liked this book, I just wanted to choose something less complicated to read this week! :)

The Lottery

Title: The Lottery
Author: Beth Goobie
Pages: 289

The Lottery is about a girl called Sal.  Sal's high school is run by a group of elite students called the "Shadow Council".  They terrorize the rest of the student body for no reason but to stay in power.  Every year, they draw a "lottery".  Every student at the school is entered in the lottery, and whoever wins becomes the Shadow Council's "victim".  The victim is shunned by the entire school.  He/she has no friends, no matter how close they were before, and they must do the Shadow Council's every whim.  Sal is unlucky winner.  The book follows her as she struggles through this year.
There is also a short story called "The Lottery" that is about how a town sacrifices one person a year in order to keep good harvest.  I think that the book I read is a modern take on that short story.  One person a year is sacrificed to keep the school in order and in fear of the Shadow Council.  I didn't really like this book.  I found it annoying how no one resisted against the Shadow Council.  The Council does horrible stuff to people who do resist against it, but if a large group of students all made a pact to overthrow the Council, they would probably win.

ORR

Title of the book: The Gates
Author: John Collony
Genre: Fantasy

Comments: I only read the first 30 pages of this book and it is really complicated. At the beginning they are talking about science which I have never heard of but after time it starts to make sense. The author of this book is John Collony. It takes place somewhere in the united states. The main character of the book is a boy called Samuel Johnson.

Samuel and his dog were walking through the streets and as always they passed their neighbors house. Samuel's neighbors are very strange. As he passes their neighbors house he looks in their basement through the window and sees something strange. It is a blue light which Samuel has never seen before. Samuel takes a closer look and then he sees that there are his neighbors standing around it and getting inhaled by the blue hole. Now there are three other people coming out of it. The boy can't believe his eyes, these are not normal people, one is in a spider shape and then there is one that looks like an octopus. Samuel's dog is trying to pull him away. The octopus thing looks at Samuel running away.

This is the main thing what happens in these 30 pages. The octopus also tells his friends that he saw Samuel and he tells them that they have to kill the boy before he says anything to someone else. Now it is very exciting because I want to know what is going to happen to Samuel. I think that he is somehow going to defend himself from these creatures and that he will have a lot of trouble.

A Great And Terrible Beauty

Title: A Great And Terrible Beauty
Author: Libba Bray
Genre: Historic Fiction

Comments: Assembly day is coming up and the girls are nervous about their parents visiting them and seeing the graceful and well-mannered ladies that they have become. Felicity is thrilled when she learns that her father is coming to Assembly Day but is later terribly disappointed when he sends a note to announce that he will not be able to make it as more important duty calls him. Pippa learns that she is being married to Mr. Bartleby Bumble. The man is older than he father but is wealthy enough that no one seems to care about lovely Pippa's faith. Gemma's father, brother and grand-mother also come but are forced to lie and invent stories. Gemma gets tired of this web of lies and turns her back on them in front of everybody and leaves to her room. Ann tries everything to attract Tom, Gemma's brother, attention. But she is disappointed when one of her little white lies come right back at her and ruins her plan.

"Today is Assembly Day. My dictionary has no formal entry for this occasion, but if it did, it might go something like this:
Assembly Day (n.) A boarding school tradition in which the family of the schoolgirl is allowed a visit, resulting in the mortification of all and the enjoyment of none."

I like this quote because it makes it very clear to us how Gemma is feeling.
