Title: The Lottery

Pages: 289
The Lottery is about a girl called Sal. Sal's high school is run by a group of elite students called the "Shadow Council". They terrorize the rest of the student body for no reason but to stay in power. Every year, they draw a "lottery". Every student at the school is entered in the lottery, and whoever wins becomes the Shadow Council's "victim". The victim is shunned by the entire school. He/she has no friends, no matter how close they were before, and they must do the Shadow Council's every whim. Sal is unlucky winner. The book follows her as she struggles through this year.
There is also a short story called "The Lottery" that is about how a town sacrifices one person a year in order to keep good harvest. I think that the book I read is a modern take on that short story. One person a year is sacrificed to keep the school in order and in fear of the Shadow Council. I didn't really like this book. I found it annoying how no one resisted against the Shadow Council. The Council does horrible stuff to people who do resist against it, but if a large group of students all made a pact to overthrow the Council, they would probably win.
