On the over of the book, is a girl with yellow eyes. Yellow eyes are a significant symptom of the Yellow Fever, which is what this whole book is about. :) |
Author: Laurie Halse Anderson

The book i am recently reading for the brochure project, The Fever 1793, is about the epidemic yellow fever, that struck Philadelphia, and it tells about the survival of the Cook family. Mattie, our protagonist is off to help her family and from being that lazy and spoiled child, she becomes very independent and strong young adult (14 years old).
I think that Mattie is a very defined girl, that can prove what is truly inside her, and not all people get that quality, but she does. For example, around chapter 7, Matilda and her grandfather go off for a walk, and end up being at least 10 miles away from the city. Having to rides or water to drink, her grandfather soon looses all his energy and may be a victim of the fever (sweating, shivers). Mattie does all that was in her power to save her grandfather, which she accomplishes, but ends up being the victim of the fever herself, but gets out of it, luckily, all healthy and alive.
If you want to know what happens in the rest of the book, how Matilda's mother goes and the rest of her family lives, I strongly encourage you to read the book. It is a really good choice and it teaches much about history of the United States and medicine.
