A Great And Terrible Beauty

Title: A Great And Terrible Beauty
Author: Libba Bray
Genre: Historic Fiction

Comments: Assembly day is coming up and the girls are nervous about their parents visiting them and seeing the graceful and well-mannered ladies that they have become. Felicity is thrilled when she learns that her father is coming to Assembly Day but is later terribly disappointed when he sends a note to announce that he will not be able to make it as more important duty calls him. Pippa learns that she is being married to Mr. Bartleby Bumble. The man is older than he father but is wealthy enough that no one seems to care about lovely Pippa's faith. Gemma's father, brother and grand-mother also come but are forced to lie and invent stories. Gemma gets tired of this web of lies and turns her back on them in front of everybody and leaves to her room. Ann tries everything to attract Tom, Gemma's brother, attention. But she is disappointed when one of her little white lies come right back at her and ruins her plan.

"Today is Assembly Day. My dictionary has no formal entry for this occasion, but if it did, it might go something like this:
Assembly Day (n.) A boarding school tradition in which the family of the schoolgirl is allowed a visit, resulting in the mortification of all and the enjoyment of none."

I like this quote because it makes it very clear to us how Gemma is feeling.

  1. I like how you added that quote at the end :)
This sounds like a really interesting book, and so is this summary. You used a lot of detail and I learned a lot ... Good Job! :D
