Title: So Totally Emily Ebers
Author: Lisa Yee
Genre: Teen fiction
This week, I started reading the book called So Totally Emily Ebers. This book is a very light teen fiction, it is not very difficult to read, and it is actually quite entertaining. The book is written in form of a diary that a teenager, Emily Ebers, writes. She addresses the diary with "Dear Dad" almost every time. She sends some of the entries to her father, who is divorced from her mom, while she keeps others to herself. Emily starts off her first letter/entry saying how her mom and she were going to move, and how it is very difficult to say goodbye to her best friends A.J., and Nicole, whom she has known her entire life. I can partially relate to this, because I have moved a few times in my life, as well, and it can be very hard to move away from people you have grown very close to, and whom you have become really good friends with. The next entry talks about how it was extremely hard for her to say goodbye to her dad, who won't be living with her anymore, but will be going on a very long tour with his band. This entry was really sad, because the reader could tell how much Emily loved her dad, and how heart-wrenching it was for her to let him go. Emily and her mom, whom she calls Alice, have moved to a place called Rancho Rosetta, in California, which is much different from where Emily used to live, and it is also fairly far away. It doesn't help that Emily is not very close with her quirky, strange mom, who is always busy, and usually gets lost with all her notebooks, checklists, and post-its. So far into the book, Emily's summer vacation is not going very well, because she finds Rancho Rosetta quite boring, and it doesn't help her frustration that her mom signed her up for volleyball, despite the fact that Emily is not very athletic. Consequently, Emily starts having huge fights with Alice, after which she always writes to her dad, telling him how much she wished she was with him on tour, and how she is hoping that one day all of them will be able to live together as a family in their hometown of Allendale.
