Lolita

Title: Lolita
Author: Vladimir Vladimirovic Nabakov
Genre: Tragic/drama

The book Lolita is one of the most famous and well-known books of the 20th century. It was published in 1955, and was originally written by Nabakov in English, and later translated into Russian. I really love classics by Russian authors, and I thought that this book would be an amazing read. Frankly, it is gorgeously written, but the theme and the overall topic of the entire book was, and continues to be, very controversial. I would not, at all, recommend this book to young readers. Lolita is a very heavy novel, that talks about pedophilia and kidnapping. The narrator of the novel, whose point of view the novel is written in is a very troubled and difficult character, whose name is Humbert Humbert. When he was around thirteen years old, he fell, as he describes "hopelessly and shamelessly" in love with a girl just a few months older than him. Unfortunately and tragically, this girl, Annabel, died very soon after her summer with Humbert ended, by catching a dangerous and fatal bacteria called typhus. This has left Humbert scarred for life. Even he believes that it was Annabel who has sparked his unnatural obsession with nymphets, or young, teenage girls. In the first pages of the book, Humbert describes his troubling childhood and college life. His mother was struck my lightning, when he was only four years old, and he was basically raised by his father. Humbert's father used to own a very luxurious hotel, and from what I could gather, they were very wealthy. He was a Swiss citizen, who had both French and Austrian roots. Humbert was educated in both France and England. As a child, he was a very good student, abd went to an elite school. However, after Annabel, everything seemed to start going downhill for Humbert. At college, he had many experience with prostitues, and was even married to a woman who left him for a Russian cab driver. Despite all the failed attempts to erase Annabel out of his mind, he couldn't. So far, I can see that the plot of this novel will be very intricate and complicated, but I am really courious to see what other dark personality traits Humbert could be hiding.

  1. I like how you read a book from 57 years ago. Interesting choice :)
