City Of Bones

Title: City of Bones (Part of the Mortal Instruments Series)
Author: Cassandra Clare
Genre: Teen Fiction
Pages: 512

City of Bones tells the story of Clary Fray, who is 15 years old and lives with her eccentric mother in Brooklyn. he lives alone with her mother, due to the fact that her father died before she was born. The story begins when Clary and a childhood friend, Simon go to a club. At the door, an unusual boy catches the eye of Clary. While she follows him, she notices a band of equally unusually teenagers doing the same. The group corners the boy and kills him. This is how Clary meets Jace Wayland, Isabelle and Alex Lightwood. They are all Nelphim or Shadowhunters, which are essentially demon hunters. After her mother is attacked by demons the next day while Clary is at a poetry reading, she goes back to her house, and then she is attacked by the same demon. When Jace rescues her from her apartment he takes her back to the "Institute" which is his home. At first she doesn't believe in this mythical world that is really there. Yet slowly she starts to realize it's all true. She discovers the her mother was in fact also a Shadowhunter but her father is in fact, Valentine, an evil Shadowhunter. She finds out that he want the Mortal Cup to use for evil, an key to the survival of the Nelphim race and must go to find it. Yet when Clary finds the cup with the help of Jace, Isabelle and Alec, it again falls into the clutches on Valentine, so she must go get it back and save her mother. This takes up most of the rest of the story with a few twists and turns along the way.

I enjoyed this book a lot, mostly because I have read the "prequel" series called the Infernal Devices so the idea was familiar along with references to characters from the previous series. I think what makes this book really good is that a lot of it you would not expect, I found my self surprised throughout this book a lot. I would recommend this book to people who like any of Cassandra Clare or Maggie Steifvater's books.

  1. Wow that sounds like a really interesting book! I know we both really enjoy reading similar novels, so would you mind if I borrowed it?
