Title: Water for Elephants
Author: Sara Gruen
Number of pages read: 160/335
This week I continued reading "Water for Elephants". The book once again goes back to old Jacob for just one chapter. Jacob talks about his excitement of going to the circus and explain how nice he acts to nurses. Going to the circus means a lot to Jacob and it brings back the memories that he once again tells us about. After this the books goes back to the young Jacob. The tension between August and Jacob and August and Marlene rose. When August asked Jacob for a drink Jacob denied which made August very pissed and angry. Also when August and Marlene went to dinner Marlene got upset with August because he was trying to control her life. She was sick and tired of him telling her to do everything so she started doing things on her own. When the came back to the Marlene's dressing room (August and Jacob), Uncle Al was waiting for them with big news. He has finally bought a bull (elephant). This was on of the most prestigious animals for a circus and he has bought the best one of them. It was a her and her name was Rosie. Jacob was the one who got the honor of taking care of her. Unfortunately the elephant wasn't that smart. It turned out that this elephant was one of the dumbest and that Uncle Al spent money on nothing. August got very upset which made him torture the elephant. He started beating it in order to teach her to walk. Jacob on the other hand was again the one in the middle watching all this and trying to keep Marlene down who was heavily crying. Th next day they had another one of their parties where Jacob borrowed a tux once again. Marlene and August were dancing for a while until he left to get a drink. Marlene grabbed Jacob and they started dancing. Out of nowhere Jacob grabbed Marlene and kissed her. This was my favorite part so far the but the outcome wasn't what I expected. Marlene got pissed and ran away looking for August. She did not tell him anything but it was obvious she felt like that kiss shouldn't have happened.
The highlight and definitely my favorite part was when Jacob kissed Marlene. It was obvious he liked her but Marlene wasn't that happy. This part made me wonder does Marlene like Jacob but wants to stay faithful to August or does she not like Jacob and the kiss was wrong completely.
"Then she yanks away, taking several steps backward and staring at me with her stricken eyes. "Jacob," she says, her voice cracking. "Oh God---Jacob."
This part described the Marlene's reaction to the kiss that she received from Jacob. It was a shock for her and she probably wished that it never happened. I think that later in the book August will find this out and kick Jacob out of the circus. Also maybe Jacob and Marlene will kiss again but this time having a real kiss.
