Title: The Secret Garden
Author: Frances Hodgson Burnett
Genre: Historical Fiction
Number of pages: 223/311
Report Section: Mary goes to the manor for lunch and Martha tells her that Colin is waiting for her in his room. However, Mary refuses to go because Dickon was also waiting for her in the garden. When Colin hears about that he gets angry. Later, during Mary's free time, she decides to go and visit Colin. He then says that he doesn't like Dickon because he is taking much of Mary's time however she says that she likes them both and she won't speak with Colin any more if he says this again. Later Mary decides to go and visit Colin every morning. On that same night Mary is awakened by Colin who refuses to stop crying if Mary doesn't go and see him. She at the end says that she hates him and he tells her that he will soon die. Mary however thinks that this is just his imagination. Colin asks her if he can accompany Dickon and Mary next time. The girl does agree and then she lulls him to sleep with another story of the secret garden. Mary meets Colin and Dickon and the three children speak again of the garden, and begin preparations to bring Colin there. On the next day Colin goes to the secret garden and Mary points out all the things she had been explaining in her stories of the secret garden. Colin then says that he will get well, and "live forever and ever and ever."
Response Section: I am again not as impressed as I was at the beginning of the book. I truly predicted that Colin will go to the secret garden but nothing more than that happened. There weren't any conflicts except the one between Colin and Mary which was only written in two paragraphs. Also there is nothing really predictable so I don't know what to expect next. Maybe there will be a conflict between the three children and maybe someone will get hurt. We will find out in the next couple of chapters.
Passage Section: "I had seen it - and I had been in," she said. "I found the key and got in weeks ago. But I daren't tell you - I daren't because I was so afraid I couldn't trust you - for sure!"
These are the last words that Mary says in chapter 18 (page 198) It shows how actually Colin didn't know about the secret garden until now. He didn't know that Mary has seen it before. He only knew stories about it.
