Cold Mountain Blog Post #4

Cold Mountain Blog Post #4

Title: Cold Mountain
Author: Charles Frazier
 Genres: Historical Fiction/ Adventure
 Percent read: 67/100

 Summary:

The fourth section of my reading begins through the eyes of Inman. As he moves forward in his journey it seemingly only gets harder. The hardships that he faces include hunger violence along with other adversities. Along his travels he occasionally meets new characters who either help, for example they clothe and shelter him or he helps them, for example he helps one of them track and recover a hog, which had just been stolen from this civilian by Union soldiers. Farther along his journey he meets a civilian who wants nothing do with the war and who gives him medical treatment to clean and heal his wounds.

  Response:

To me the section I read was very interesting. Moreover, I feel like Inman’s journey in coming closer to its end.  As he trudges on I imagine that he is coming closer to Cold Mountain.

I predict in future reading, that because nothing in this section was about Ada, that she too will only face more hardships, because for almost the entire novel her story has been nearly parallel to Inman’s

  Passage:

“That's just pain she said. It goes eventually. And when it's gone, there's no lasting memory. Not the worst of it anyway. It fades. Our minds aren't made to hold on to the particulars of pain the way we do bliss. It's a gift God gives us, a sign of his care for us.”

This quote was spoken by a Native American women whom Inman meets along his journey. As a reader I feel this quote is meant to give a different outlook on pain and how this person views, and deals with pain. Also it shows knowledge and wisdom concerning pain itself.
